Authentic and Cross Cultural Leadership


Driven by the need to manage the team in complex, international and cross-cultural contexts and spurred by deep-rooted concerns about the ethical conduct of today’s leaders based on chilling examples of corporate and government malfeasance, a new type of genuine and values-based leadership — Authentic Leadership (AL) is emerging.

Authentic Leadership goes beyond the traditional approaches of charismatic and transformational leadership, bringing together the concept of authenticity with positive psychology. Authentic leaders are “individuals who are deeply aware of how they think and behave and are perceived by others as being aware of their own and others’ values/moral perspective, knowledge, and strengths; aware of the context in which they operate; and who are confident, hopeful, optimistic, resilient, and high on moral character” (Avolio, 2010).

Developing AL means become self-aware and form your strengths and attitude toward a positive and authentic approach.

AL is particularly crucial in international cross-cultural contexts where the self-awareness of your values and strengths goes together with the awareness of the others values, tradition and beliefs.
